DARe to go FURther @ Lawndale Art Center

UUPA CRUST

Taking into consideration the staggering range of diversity that the African Dispora has to offer DaRe to go FURther aims to investigate and reveal many enigmatic layers. We are fastidiously addressing the presences of stereotypes, myths and cultural similarities of both African-American and native Africans. Robert Hodge, Lovie olivia and Michael Kahil Taylor of the UUPA Crust Collective, are exploring and navigating beyond the surface of many beliefs associated with certain communities. In forms of Visual narratives, paintings, and mixed media on paper, we analyze the adaption and mutability of culture.
From Kenya, the Caribean to New Orleans and back to our neighborhood blocks we've witnessed cultural exchange and contrast that we wish to express in these works. Various symbols of wealth, status and spiritual practices are relevant through tattoos, scarification, piercings and elaborate coiffures as forms of identification. Myth, Folklore, spirituality and hip-hop harmoniously blend into visual amalgamation expressed through, DARe to go FURther.

My Favorite Piece is called Belles Curves 2009 addresses ideas of social accepted beauty. At the end 17th century Sarah Baartman or as many may know her as the Hottentots Venus, was displayed in the Parisian markets as a freak of nature marvelled over for her oversized buttocks.

Another relevant piece is Pic 2> "Port-Au-Prince Princess visual deals with the story of two sisters in Haiti that suffer rape. Rape takes place in this region daily, where at least 50% of women are raped. The UN has accompanied this region for period of time but is being accused of these acts of violence. Rape became illegal in Haiti in 2005."
