CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. CARE is continuing to rush aid and emergency team members to Haiti following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the impoverished country on Tuesday, January 12th. The quake's epicenter was just 10 miles south of the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, home to some 3 million people, the majority of whom live on less than $2 per day. Up to 50,000 people are feared dead, and many more have lost their homes in the most powerful quake ever recorded in the country – the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.

CARE has launched an international appeal for funds for Haiti to immediately start emergency operations, but the full extent of this catastrophe still is not known. Communications have been significantly damaged in the disaster, but there is no doubt that the needs will be urgent. Many buildings, including essential services like hospitals, have been destroyed – meaning this disaster is a growing catastrophe. What we do know is that millions of people in this impoverished nation have been affected, and they need your help.
